Beastlord is the Luclin-era melee-pet hybrid. They melee alongside a permanent warder (a racial flavor pet — cat, bear, wolf, spider), cast shaman-lite spells (slow, buff, heal, regen), and cover most of the Ranger's hybrid utility role for evil-side races. The Beastlord is the only playable class outside the Classic 14 that fits inside The Last Camp's era. The Beastlord identity is melee DPS plus pet plus spell utility. A Beastlord hits acceptably, the warder hits acceptably, and together with slow / haste / heal spells they are a self-contained combat duo. In groups, they DPS and offer slow as a fallback when no Shaman is present.

Role and identity

A Beastlord exists to be a self-sufficient hybrid that doesn't need a group to function. The warder handles tank duty, the Beastlord handles DPS, and the spell book covers slow, haste, and small heals. The class is the only hybrid in EQ designed for the duo from level 1.

Identity is the bond with the warder. The pet is permanent — it auto-summons on death, scales with the Beastlord's level, and is racially flavored to the player's character. Cat for Vah Shir, bear for Barbarian and Ogre, spider for Iksar, wolf for Troll. The class is built around that companionship.

Strengths

  • Permanent warder — auto-summons on death
  • Slow line (weaker than Shaman but useful in Shaman-less groups)
  • Haste / Strength buffs for self and pet
  • Self-heal sustain through nature spells
  • Strong solo curve via melee + pet tag-team
  • Feral Swipe / Bite of the Asp procs add ticking damage

Weaknesses

  • Slow weaker than Shaman slow (Cripple line)
  • Heal smaller than priest classes
  • Pet pathing breaks in tight zones
  • No CC contribution
  • DPS lower than pure melee classes

Solo, group, and raid

Solo

Strong. Melee + pet tag-team. A Beastlord can clear any outdoor zone up to their level, and a Troll or Iksar Beastlord adds regen that extends camps indefinitely. The duo-with-self structure means no downtime waiting for a pet to recover or a buff to refresh.

Group

Groups without a Shaman welcome a Beastlord for the slow and the pet. Groups with a Shaman welcome a Beastlord for the DPS and the haste. Solo-friendly but not as strong as Druid or Necro in the kite curve. Signature contribution is the slow-on-pull plus pet-tank-while-Beastlord-melees rotation.

Raid

Pet-melee DPS seat plus emergency slow backup. AA priority is Innate Strength, Combat Fury, and the Beastlord-specific Hastened Pet Discipline. Improved Pet Damage and Hastened Slow round out late-tier picks. Beastlords parse mid-melee tier on most raid bosses.

The Last Camp any-race-class combos

The standout The Last Camp Beastlord combos break the canonical race lock. Halfling Beastlord is the headline — the smallest body in the game with a permanent bear warder, faction-friendly across Misty Thicket and Rivervale. Wood Elf Beastlord of Tunare is the natural-fit non-canonical race, with Faydark starting and a wolf warder built for the elven aesthetic.

Erudite Beastlord is the surprise build — the highest WIS scaling for spell utility (Beastlord casting benefits from WIS), with a spider warder that fits the Erudin aesthetic of bizarre experimentation. Dark Elf Beastlord of Cazic-Thule is the corrupted-Teir'Dal build, with Neriak starting and a wolf or bat (lore-flexible) warder. High Elf Beastlord of Tunare is the rarest — a Felwithe nature-priest with a cat warder. Gnome Beastlord is the comic-clockwork build, the smallest INT-stat-cap Beastlord with an Ak'Anon-aesthetic warder option.

Spell / discipline highlights

Defining spells: Spirit of the Howler / Wolf / Bear / Cat (warder summons), Slow (Sha's Reprisal line), Spirit of the Bear (STA buff), Sha's Legacy (haste), Companion's Aid (pet heal), Health line (small group heal), Bite of the Asp (DoT proc), and Feral Swipe (skill, on-cooldown DPS). Disciplines are light — Frenzied Burnout and the Beastlord-specific Pet Discipline.

AAs to prioritize

Innate Strength, Combat Fury, and Hastened Pet Discipline first. Then Improved Pet Damage, Mana Conservation, and the Beastlord-specific Improved Slow. Hastened Frenzy and Combat Stability round out the kit.

Leveling path summary

  • 1-15: Native city. Iksar in Cabilis, Vah Shir in Shar Vahl, Barbarian in Halas, Troll in Grobb, Ogre in Oggok.
  • 15-30: Newbie-yard extension. Lake of Ill Omen (Iksar), Paludal (Vah Shir), Innothule (Troll).
  • 30-45: Sol A/B or Kunark mid-zones with the warder tanking single pulls.
  • 45-60: Chardok, Karnor's, Sebilis. Slow-pet-melee rotation matures.
  • 60-65: PoP melee pool plus utility slot.

Notable gear by tier

Early Beastlords prize Spirit-Animated Claws, Bone-Splinter Spear, and any chain piece with WIS and STR. Kunark adds Acrylia Claws, Spirit-Bonded Spear, and the Iksar Beastlord chain set. Luclin (the class's home expansion) provides Vah Shir Beastlord weapons and the Acrylia Caverns drops. PoP endgame is the Time-tier beastlord chain and Spirit Touched Claws. Epic 1.0 Spirit of the Howler carries a wolf-warder summon click that replaces the standard pet line for a long-duration boost.
