Venril Sathir
The undead iksar lord of Karnor's Castle. Kunark-era raid boss and Lich Lord.
Venril Sathir is the undead iksar lord — zone boss of Karnor's Castle, a sprawling four-floor dungeon in the Field of Bone region of Kunark. He is one of the most lore-significant figures of the Kunark expansion: an iksar warlord-turned-lich, ruler of the Sathirian dynasty whose name attached to the entire Field of Bone region (Burning Woods, Karnor's, Emerald Jungle). The castle is his standing army's home, and the encounter with him on the upper floors is the climactic kill of the entire complex.

Lore
Venril Sathir is the founder of the Sathirian iksar dynasty — a warlord during the iksar empire's middle period who survived the Trakanon collapse by undertaking the lich transition. He claimed Karnor's Castle as his standing seat, and the castle has been the home of his bloodline (now mostly undead) for the centuries since. His son, Lord Lythanis, holds the lower floors of the castle as a separate named encounter. The family's ghouls and skeletons fill out the standard pulls — every wing of Karnor's is a Sathirian institution.
In canonical lore Venril's lich transition was a deliberate choice to outlast Trakanon's vengeance and to preserve the iksar bloodline through the long collapse. The Sathirian dynasty is still revered (and feared) in iksar oral history, and the Cabilis quest chains reference him as both an ancestral figure and a present threat — the iksar relationship to Venril is morally complicated in a way most Kunark NPCs are not. He is one of the few canonical NPCs in the era whose hostile present-day status is not a clean villain-coded position; he was preserving his people's memory by methods his people now find horrifying.
Court and lieutenants
The castle is held by the Sathirian undead at every level: the lower floors by Lord Lythanis and his retainers, the middle floors by the family's ghoul-knights, and the upper floors by Venril's personal court. Lord Lythanis is a serious named encounter in his own right, with his own loot table including faction-significant drops and one of the era's better mid-tier two-handed weapons. The descent through the castle is therefore a multi-named campaign rather than a single-target raid; clearing Lythanis is itself a worthwhile run for groups that can't yet field the full Venril raid.
Encounter
Venril Sathir is a level 60 single-spawn on the upper floors of Karnor's Castle, fightable by a 12-18 player light raid in era-correct gear. His signature mechanics include a hard-hitting lich-style melee combined with a recurring AE that drains mana from the entire raid, a fear effect that can scatter the back ranks if undefended, and a death-touch on his lieutenant that triggers if the raid pulls sloppily. The fight is a tank-and-spank with the wrinkle that mana management is harder than usual — the AE drain forces the casters to bandage their pools more carefully than the typical Classic-tier raid.
The pull from the lower castle is its own challenge: Karnor's social-aggro radius is generous, and the path from the entry to the upper-floor pull point requires a clean clear or careful split-pulls. The Last Camp tuning may differ — verify before pulling.
Approach
The standard Venril approach is a 12-18 player light raid assembling in Field of Bone, descending into Karnor's through the standard zone-in, and committing to a multi-hour clear of the lower and middle floors before staging at the upper-floor entrance. Mana-conservation buffs should be running on every caster group, and the cleric line should have backup interrupt-immunity and fear-immunity buffs in rotation. A standard kill clocks in at forty-five to sixty minutes including the descent. Karnor's is one of the most rewarding raid loops in the Kunark tier — Venril and Lythanis between them anchor a multi-week loot cycle for any guild operating at this level.
