Fiery Defender is the Paladin Epic 1.0 — a two-handed slashing sword granted by Mithaniel Marr at the close of the Paladin epic chain. Paired in lore and practice with the older SoulFireSoulFire2H Slashing·SLOT: PRIMARYDMG 23 DLY 45STR+7WIS+7ClickComplete HealHeal+7500Cast 10.0s · Recast 2.3s · Mana 400CLASSPalWT5.0MAGICLORENO DROP, the two weapons together complete the Paladin's holy-knight identity for the era.

The sword's signature is its proc, Holy Shock, a magic-damage strike with a brief stun that fires on a successful melee hit. The chain tying the sword to the Forge of Ages combine and the Quillmane / Sir Lucan story line is one of the most narratively coherent epics in the era.

Why it matters

Fiery Defender is a Paladin's transition from "competent off-tank with heal utility" to "raid-relevant holy knight." The combination of high 2H damage, the proc, the stat line, and the WIS / MANA pool means a Paladin equipped with Fiery Defender can hold meaningful aggro, deal real damage, and continue casting heals and stuns through long encounters. The Holy Shock proc compounds with the Paladin's normal threat sources — stuns, heals, melee swings — into the steady aggro generation the class is built around. Every proc adds a damage tick and a short stun that interrupts incoming spells, both of which translate to threat the Paladin would otherwise have to spend mana on stuns to produce.

At-a-glance highlights

Effect

Holy Shock procs on a successful melee hit and applies a magic-damage strike (around 155 damage) along with a short stun (about 1.5 seconds). The effect is magic-resistible, so resist-stacked targets cut both the damage and the stun chance.

The stun length is short enough that it rarely interrupts a tank's hate cycle the way a longer player-stun would, but long enough to clip the casting bar of a mob mid-spell. On caster encounters and add-control fights, the cumulative proc rate of the 2H delay against multiple swings gives the Paladin a passive interrupt source on top of their active stuns.

How to obtain

Fiery Defender is the final reward of the Paladin Epic 1.0 chain. The chain begins with components in Karana / Freeport — Sir Lucan d'Lere material, the Quillmane feather drop, and Halas-side faction work — then progresses through Mithaniel Marr's tests in the Plane of Hate. The capstone combines several quest pieces at the Forge of Ages to produce the finished sword.

Several steps require raid-tier coordination, particularly the Plane of Hate segment. Faction grinds with Mithaniel Marr's followers and the various good-aligned cities are required at multiple points, making the chain harder for evil-aligned Paladin race / class combinations on The Last Camp's open system.

Era alternatives

Pre-epic, the Paladin's 2H slot is filled by the SoulFireSoulFire2H Slashing·SLOT: PRIMARYDMG 23 DLY 45STR+7WIS+7ClickComplete HealHeal+7500Cast 10.0s · Recast 2.3s · Mana 400CLASSPalWT5.0MAGICLORENO DROP chain reward and various Classic raid 2H drops. Most carry a single utility — heal click, stun proc, or decent damage — but Fiery Defender is the first weapon that delivers all three in one slot.

In raid contexts the sword competes with later Velious 2H drops for primary slot attention. The proc and the WIS / MANA contribution typically keep Fiery Defender competitive even where another sword wins on raw damage, because Paladin's identity rewards utility over flat melee output.

The Last Camp any-race-class note

The Last Camp's open class system allows non-canonical Paladin race combinations — Erudite Paladin, Half-Elf Paladin variants beyond the canonical — to pursue the epic chain. The class restriction is what gates the sword, so any character who advanced as a Paladin can wield Fiery Defender regardless of starting race. The faction-grind segments are easier for canonically good-aligned races; evil-aligned Paladin combinations on The Last Camp face additional faction work to complete the same chain.

The Mithaniel Marr alignment of the chain's late stages is consistent regardless of race — the deity gates on class, not race or starting alignment.

Lore note

The chain's narrative ties Fiery Defender to Mithaniel Marr — the deity of valor and protection — and frames the sword as the god's blessing on a Paladin who has proven their willingness to defend the innocent. The Sir Lucan d'Lere story line, the Quillmane segment, and the Plane of Hate trial all serve as moral tests rather than purely mechanical hurdles. The Forge of Ages combine is described as the moment Mithaniel Marr's flame is bound into the steel.
