Playing Iksar on The Last Camp
Reptilian scholars of Cabilis — natural AC and regen, canonical Monk and Shadow Knight, plus every The Last Camp exotic class with the worst faction wall in the game.
Playing an Iksar on The Last Camp is the high-AC, regen-bonus, Cabilis-or-bust pick. Iksar are canonically Warrior, Monk, Shadow Knight, Necromancer, Shaman, and Wizard — a strong tank-and-caster roster with the canonical Monk slot and the canonical Cazic-Thule deity tradition. The Last Camp unlocks Cleric, Paladin, Ranger, Druid, Bard, Rogue, Magician, Enchanter, Beastlord, and Berserker on the chassis.
The race has innate AC bonuses, an HP-regen tick that scales through every level, and the most isolated starting city in the game. Iksar is the "sit in Kunark for 30 levels, then face the world that hates you" experience.

Why this race
Iksar carry the strongest natural defenses of any race — innate AC bonus, innate regen tick, and an HP curve that scales well into the upper levels. The Monk class chassis was originally designed around Iksar (Cabilis is one of the two canonical Monk guild cities), and Iksar Monks are still mechanically excellent.
The race also has the most cohesive starting culture in the game — Cabilis is a fully realized Iksar city with no overlap to any other race, and Kunark is a continent designed for Iksar to level through 1-50 without leaving home.
Stat profile detail
Iksar starting stats lean on STA (95), AGI (90), and WIS (80). DEX (85) is good, STR (70), INT (75), CHA (40) are mid-low, and the racial AC bonus (+12) plus HP regen (+1 per tick at level 1, scaling up) are the headline stats.
For Monk, the AGI/STA combination plus the AC bonus plus the regen makes Iksar the canonical Monk chassis — no other race comes close mechanically. For Necromancer, the regen synergy with cannibalize-and-life-tap loops is unique among caster races.
The race's +10 magic resist, +10 fire resist, +10 cold resist combined baseline is the broadest resist coverage on the server — the design intent was to balance the worst starting faction with the best mechanical defense profile.
Canonical class fits
Iksar Monk is the signature pick — the canonical Monk chassis with all the racial bonuses (AC, regen) compounding. Iksar Shadow Knight of Cazic-Thule is the canonical evil-tank with high AC and self-regen. Iksar Necromancer is one of the best Necromancer chassis in the game — high INT, regen for the cannibalize loop, and the canonical Cabilis Necro guild. Iksar Shaman, Iksar Warrior, and Iksar Wizard are all canonical and mechanically strong.
The Last Camp exotic combos
Iksar Paladin of Mithaniel Marr is the most lore-bizarre, mechanically interesting unlock — a reptilian crusader of the good-Marr deity, requiring a long Marr-temple faction grind from a Cabilis baseline (see faction custom combos). Some players find this combo deeply rewarding for the redemption-arc roleplay.
Iksar Cleric of Mithaniel Marr has the same deity puzzle. Iksar Cleric of Bertoxxulous stays inside the canonical Iksar deity space and is much faster to grind. Iksar Druid and Iksar Ranger require deity gymnastics — Karana-of-the-storm reads OK for an Iksar, Tunare does not.
Iksar Bard is one of the best exotic Bards on the server — high WIS, the canonical lore-extension as a "Cabilis war-skald" lands, and the small-frame Bard tricks work fine on the medium chassis. Iksar Beastlord with a snake or scaled-warder is canonical-adjacent (the SoL Beastlord class wasn't originally canonical for Iksar but was added later in some readings — The Last Camp makes it permanent).
Iksar Magician and Iksar Enchanter work fine on the WIS-and-INT curve. Iksar Rogue is mechanically OK but the Cabilis Rogue guild lore is thin.
Faction implications
Iksar wake up with the worst starting faction position of any race. They are hostile or kill-on-sight at every Antonican city, every Faydwer city, and every Odus city. Their friendly factions are entirely on Kunark: Cabilis Legion, Cabilis Crusaders, Scaled Mystics, and a handful of neutral Kunark outdoor merchants.
The path to PoK requires either the Iksar-friendly Lake of Ill Omen → Field of Bone → Warsliks → Cabilis loop until you outlevel the early-Antonica faction problem, or a long faction grind to a single foreign city. Most Iksar plan to spend levels 1-50 entirely in Kunark, hit PoK around 50, and then start grinding Antonican faction post-Epic.
Recommended starting picks
Iksar Monk is one of the canonical-defining picks of EQ — easy newbie zone (Field of Bone), strong solo curve, signature class. Iksar Necromancer is the second-tier easy pick with the best Necromancer chassis in the game. Iksar Shaman for the priest-first pick with the canonical Cazic-Thule deity.
Cultural and racial gear
Cultural Iksar is one of the strongest cultural armor sets in the game — scaled and bone armor that compounds with the race's natural AC bonus. Cabilis has the densest race-specific quest network of any starting city, and the Kunark leveling network (Field of Bone → Kurns → Warsliks → Lake of Ill Omen → Overthere → Karnors) is the most cohesive 1-50 zone progression in the game.
Tradeoffs to know
- Innate AC bonus and HP regen are the headline mechanical advantages — both stack through every level.
- Worst starting faction in the game — every Antonica, Faydwer, and Odus city is hostile or kill-on-sight at level 1.
- CHA penalty is severe — Iksar vendor prices are the worst in the game until faction work helps.
- Cabilis-and-Kunark-only leveling 1-50 is the canonical experience — the continent is designed for it.
- The XP penalty Iksar carried on Live is removed on eqmac-era servers, so the race is mechanically pure-upside on The Last Camp.
Group and raid role summary
- Best canonical fits: Monk (signature canonical chassis), Necromancer, Shadow Knight of Cazic-Thule, Shaman, Wizard.
- Best The Last Camp-exotic fits: Bard (high WIS, lore-extension as war-skald), Beastlord with snake or scaled-warder, Cleric of Bertoxxulous.
- Avoid: Paladin or Cleric of Marr unless committing to the longest faction grind on the server.
Lore notes
Iksar are the descendants of an ancient reptilian race that ruled Kunark before the Sebilisian Empire fell. They worship Cazic-Thule (god of fear, primary) and Bertoxxulous (god of disease, secondary). Cabilis is the last great Iksar city, ruled by the Legion of Cabilis under King Trakanon's distant influence (the dragon's politics still shape the city). The race's defining cultural traits are martial discipline, scholarly necromancy, and absolute distrust of the soft-skinned races who drove their empire to ruin.
