Magician Spell Research
Magician-only spell research — the Elemental Grimoire, words and elemental items, and the research-only pet and summon lines.
Magician spell research scribes pet, summon, and utility scrolls by combining words plus special elemental items inside the
Elemental GrimoireElemental GrimoireQuest ItemLORE, the Magician research book. Research is the only source for several pet and summon spells, which is the reason to train it.
Research creates the scroll. Magician recipes frequently take three components — a Words page, the previous-tier pet spell, and a special elemental drop — combined in the Elemental Grimoire to produce the next pet up.
Do not put Quill, Parchment, or a Mortar & Pestle in the combine — they make it fail. The Elemental Grimoire only takes the words and items the recipe calls for.

How research works
- Farm the Words page and the special elemental item (Pearl Shard, Breath of Solusek, Wing of Xegony, etc.), and keep the previous-tier pet spell.
- Place all three in your Elemental Grimoire (no quill, no mortar).
- Combine. Success produces the next-tier pet or summon scroll. Combine at or below your level for better odds.
You cannot research below level 16; early skill is capped at (Level − 15) × 5. Components are class-flagged on use.
Broken-recipe warning: A handful of higher pet spells — notably some level 34 and 39 pets — shipped with broken research recipes and were placed on guild merchants instead. Check the vendor before farming components for a pet that won't combine.
Recipe samples
Trivials are approximate. Vendor sold = a scroll copy also exists on a merchant; Research only = the combine is the sole source.
| Lvl | Spell | Trivial | Components | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16 | Summon Heatstone | 21 | Words of Element + Elemental Armor + Bloodstone | Vendor sold |
| 16 | Minor Summoning: Air | 22 | Words of Tyranny + Elemental: Air + Aviak Feather | Vendor sold |
| 20 | Lesser Summoning: Air | 41 | Words of Dominion + Minor Summoning: Air + Pearl Shard | Vendor sold |
| 24 | Summoning: Air | 62 | Words of Dimension + Lesser Summoning: Air + Pearl Shard | Research only |
| 29 | Greater Summoning: Fire | 82 | Words of Coercion + Summoning: Fire + Breath of Solusek | Vendor sold |
| 34 | Minor Conjuration: Fire | 122 | Words of Duress + Greater Summoning: Fire + Breath of Solusek | Research only |
| 44 | Conjuration: Fire | 162 | Words of Incarceration + Lesser Conjuration: Fire + Breath of Ro | Vendor sold |
| 49 | Greater Conjuration: Air | 182 | Words of Bondage + Conjuration: Air + Wing of Xegony | Research only |
Skill-up path
- Train, don't grind, early. Your guild GM trains Research cheaply; see the practice-rune system for the grind past trainer cap.
- Hunt the level band, not a named camp for Words pages; the elemental items (Pearl Shard, Breath of Solusek, Wing of Xegony) are the real gate per recipe.
Components worth keeping
Flame of Vox, Tears of Prexus, Essence of Rathe, Wing of Xegony, and the Words of Transcendence / Dimension / Bondage / Convocation are rare enough to bank or sell.
Race note
Magician research is class-locked, not race-locked. An Iksar, Troll, or Ogre Magician researches the same recipes as a Human or Erudite. The Last Camp's any-race-class creation doesn't change the class gate.
Common mistakes
- Putting Quill/Parchment/Mortar in the Grimoire — guaranteed failure.
- Farming components for a level 34/39 pet that's actually vendor-only — check the merchant first.
- Forgetting the previous-tier pet spell is a component of the next one — don't scribe over your only copy mid-chain.
- Letting research skill lag your level.
