Necromancer Spell Research
Necromancer-only spell research — the Book of Dark Bindings, words, and the research-only DoT, lifetap, and utility scrolls.
Necromancer spell research scribes DoT, lifetap, control, and utility scrolls by combining words inside the
Book of Dark BindingsBook of Dark BindingsQuest ItemLORE, the Necromancer research book. Research is the only source for a large slice of the Necromancer book — most of the spells you actually want are research-only.
Research creates the scroll. Necromancer recipes take one to three Words components (e.g. Words of Possession); combine them in the Book of Dark Bindings and, on success, scribe the resulting scroll normally.
Do not put Quill, Parchment, or a Mortar & Pestle in the combine — they make it fail. The Book only takes the words the recipe calls for.
At a glance
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Class lock | Necromancer only |
| Container | |
| Component family | Words |
| Governing stat | INT or WIS, whichever is higher |
| Skill cap (early) | (Level − 15) × 5 |
| Hard cap | 200 |
| Scroll sources | Researched (only path for most); a few vendor at low tier |
| Signature research-only spells | Restless Bones, Summon Dead, Call of Bones, Lich |
How research works
- Farm the Words the recipe needs — Words drop from caster-type mobs level 10+, higher mobs dropping higher-tier words.
- Place the words in your Book of Dark Bindings (no quill, no mortar).
- Combine. Success produces the spell scroll. Combine at or below your level for better odds.
You cannot research below level 16; early skill is capped at (Level − 15) × 5. Words are class-flagged on use.
Recipe samples
Trivials are approximate. Vendor sold = a scroll copy also exists on a merchant; Research only = the combine is the sole source.
| Lvl | Spell | Trivial | Components | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16 | Restless Bones | 21 | Words of Reviviscence + Sentient (Azia) | Research only |
| 20 | Harmshield | 41 | Words of Refuge + Absorption | Research only |
| 24 | Shadow Sight | 62 | Words of Discernment + Eventide | Vendor sold |
| 29 | Summon Dead | 87 | Words of Possession + Haunting + Rupturing | Research only |
| 34 | Call of Bones | 120 | Words of Motion + Neglect + Endurance | Research only |
| 39 | Nullify Magic | 142 | Words of Descrying + Seizure + Dissolution | Research only |
| 49 | Lich | 184 | Words of the Ethereal (single component) | Research only |
Skill-up path
- Train, don't grind, early. Your guild GM trains Research cheaply; see the practice-rune system for the grind past trainer cap.
- Hunt the level band, not a named camp for Words. Multi-word recipes (Summon Dead, Call of Bones) are gated on the rarest word in the set.
Components worth keeping
Words of Possession, Haunting, Ethereal, and Crippling Force are rare drops worth banking or selling.
Race note
Necromancer research is class-locked, not race-locked. A Gnome, Halfling, or Wood Elf Necromancer researches the same recipes as a Dark Elf or Iksar. The Last Camp's any-race-class creation doesn't change the class gate.
Common mistakes
- Putting Quill/Parchment/Mortar in the Book — guaranteed failure.
- Burning words on the handful of vendor-also scrolls (e.g. Shadow Sight) instead of saving combines for research-only spells.
- Starting a multi-word combine before you've farmed every word in the recipe.
- Letting research skill lag your level.
