Shawl of the Coldain Hero
The terminal reward of the Coldain Shawl Quest line. Best-in-slot back item in Velious.
Shawl of the Coldain Hero is the terminal reward of the Coldain Shawl Quest line — Velious's signature multi-step shawl chain and one of the most respected progression quests of the era. The quest line runs through escalating shawls, ranks 1 through 14, with each step requiring deeper Coldain faction standing and harder quest objectives. The Shawl of the Coldain Hero is the final reward at the top of the chain.
The shawl is widely considered the best-in-slot back item for casters and hybrids in the Velious era. The quest line's reputation comes from its scope — multiple zones, faction gates, escalating complexity — rather than the difficulty of any single step.

Stats
The final shawl carries a strong stat line for the era — meaningful HP and MANA, useful WIS / INT for caster lines, and resist contributions. Specific values evolve across the 14-shawl progression, with each step a measurable upgrade over the last. Detailed values per rank are tracked on the Coldain Shawl Quest node.
Effect
The shawl line is primarily a worn-stat item — no proc, no click. Some shawls in the chain carry small situational effects, but the Hero shawl's value is concentrated in the raw stat upgrade. The class-agnostic nature of the slot means almost any character benefits from completing the chain — caster, hybrid, melee, or pure healer.
The Hero shawl's stat block is broad rather than spiked, designed to be useful to every class rather than ideal for any single one.
How to obtain
Shawl of the Coldain Hero requires completing all 14 steps of the Coldain Shawl Quest line in order. The chain begins in Thurgadin and the Eastern Wastes, with steps that progress through faction grinds, item collection, escort quests, and finally the Kael / giant fortress segment that gates the late shawls.
The chain is gated by escalating Coldain faction requirements. A character who has not earned positive Coldain standing cannot start the early shawls, and faction loss at any point can lock progression until repaired. The late shawls require participation in the Kael Drakkel raid content, meaning the final steps cannot be soloed regardless of player level.
Why it matters
The Coldain Shawl line is regarded as one of the most narratively complete quest chains in the era — a multi-zone story arc with concrete faction consequences, escalating stakes, and a distinct progression of rewards. Players who complete the line carry the Hero shawl as a visible badge of long-term server investment. Mechanically, the back-slot stat upgrade benefits virtually every class.
Players who are not chasing the final shawl often complete a partial chain and stop at whichever rank gives them an upgrade over their current back slot — the chain is structured to reward partial completion. Even a player who only finishes the early shawls walks away with a meaningful upgrade and a foothold in Coldain faction that pays off across other Velious quest content.
Era alternatives
The back slot in Velious is otherwise filled by raid drops —
Cloak of FlamesCloak of FlamesArmor·SLOT: BACKAC10HP+50AGI+9DEX+9HASTE+36%SV FIRE+15MAGICLORE for haste, various Velious raid cloaks for stat lines — none of which match the Hero shawl's stat density without a haste / proc tradeoff.
For non-melee classes the comparison is even more lopsided. Casters and pure healers without a strong haste motivation almost always rank the Hero shawl ahead of competing back-slot items in the era.
The Last Camp any-race-class note
The Last Camp's open class system does not change the shawl quest itself — the chain is class-agnostic and only requires completing the steps. Any character of any race or class on the server can pursue and complete the Coldain Shawl line.
Race only affects starting Coldain faction in canonical EQ — most playable races begin neutral or below with the Coldain. The early shawl steps are designed to teach players how to grind Coldain faction from a low or neutral start, so race standing is rarely a real obstacle for any combination on The Last Camp.
Lore note
The shawl line tells the story of the Coldain dwarves' long war with the Kromrif giants — escalating from small favors to active raid participation in the giant fortress assault. The shawls themselves are framed as honors granted by the Coldain to outsiders who have earned a place in their fight. The Hero shawl is the highest honor the Coldain can bestow on a non-Coldain ally.
