Earthshaker
Multi-class 2H slasher with the Earthquake proc — the iconic dragon-drop pre-epic for War, Pal, Rng and SK.
Earthshaker is the iconic multi-class pre-epic two-handed sword of classic EverQuest. Heavy in the hand, slow on the swing, and built around the Earthquake proc — a chance-on-hit AE knockdown that is as recognisable to old-era players as the sword itself. It drops from Master Yael deep in The Hole, one of the longest gear-runs in classic EQ.
For a generation of players, the Earthshaker is the sword that sat in a Warrior's bag waiting for the day the group could finally clear to Yael. It is the most broadly-useful pre-epic 2H in the era and remains a credible weapon through Velious for any of the four classes that can equip it.
Stats
- 37 / 70 damage and delay (slow swing, big crit-window per hit)
- +6 STR, +6 STA
- −5 DEX (notable; Earthshaker pre-dates the era of clean stat distributions)
- Weight 16 (heavy)
The −5 DEX is intentional and meant to balance the proc — Earthshaker traded a clean stat block for a proc that, in a 1999-era group, could turn a wipe into a clean clear.
Effect
- Combat proc — Earthquake. A chance-on-hit AE knockdown that knocks back nearby mobs. The proc is one of the few non-spell sources of a knockback effect in classic EQ. In the right pull — a tightly clumped mob set near the tank — it is genuinely match-changing. In the wrong pull — adds in the doorway, or a positioned mob the casters need to stay in place — the knockback is a liability.
Earthshaker is one of the small set of EQ items where reading the room before swinging matters as much as the stat line.
How to obtain
Earthshaker drops from Master Yael, the boss-tier mob at the bottom of The Hole in old Paineel. The path to Yael runs through a long, layered dungeon with significant trash, multiple named mobs, and end-zone resist requirements. Yael himself is a serious fight at the era he was introduced — he hits hard, summons, and the drop chance on Earthshaker is real but not guaranteed (canonical chance ~33%).
For most groups the run is a half-day commitment. For a single character to walk away with the sword may take several runs.
Why it matters
Earthshaker is the canonical "I'm a real tank now" milestone for a classic-era Warrior, Paladin, Ranger or SK. Before it, the class is using a patchwork of crafted 2H weapons or cast-off raid drops. After it, the class has a stable Primary slot that lasts through the back end of classic and the start of Kunark, and a proc that does measurable work on real pulls.
The sword is also a status item. Earthshaker is recognised on sight; a Warrior at zone-in with the green-and-grey hilt visible has done the work to clear The Hole. In multi-class groups, it is one of the few pre-epic items that cleanly prioritises which class needs it most — Warriors first for tanking, then Paladin/SK as hybrid tanks, then Rangers as DPS.
The Last Camp any-race-class note
The class restriction (War / Pal / Rng / SK) is enforced at the item level on The Last Camp exactly as in classic. The open class system widens the race pool of who can play those four classes, including combinations that classic EQ never permitted; Earthshaker is class-driven, not race-driven, and an Erudite Warrior or a Halfling SK on The Last Camp can equip the sword the same as anyone else of their class.
