Zones
West Commonlands
The western half of the Commonlands plain. Orc camps, the Befallen trap door, and the corridor between the Tunnel and North Ro.
- East Commonlands
- North Ro
- Befallen
- Highpass corridor
West Commonlands is the western half of the Commonlands plain, connecting east through the Tunnel to East Commonlands, south to North Ro, and north toward the Highpass corridor. The zone is open grassland with orc camps spread across the plain, goblin raiders patrolling the central area, and — most famously — the trap door entrance to Befallen that drops players into the multi-floor undead dungeon below. For Freeport-side characters in the 5-18 range, West Commonlands is a primary outdoor stop. For travelers, it is the western shoulder of one of the busiest road networks in Classic EverQuest.
Content
- Orc camps — orc pawn, orc apprentice, orc centurion, orc legionnaire, orc oracle, orc weaponsmith. Multiple coord clusters across the plain, scaling roughly 1-15. Phase 3 audit re-pointed all orc factions to TAKP-canonical (The Last Camp-style Death Fist stamps removed; commons orcs now carry their own faction).
- Hill giants & nightfall giants — L33-37 named-tier in the western and northern quadrants. Hill giant camps cluster in the NE plain.
- Werewolves — L18-32 patrols, aggressive. The L18 cohort assists at 100-radius after the 2026-05-23 audit revert; do not pull from a long distance.
- Lord Grimrot — classic surface-named lore; not currently spawned in this revision (Phase 4 designer hold pending restore).
- Befallen entrance — the trap door drop into the dungeon below.
- Bloodsabers entry-tier questgiver — Mojax_Hikspin (L2/L3) reseeds Bloodsabers faction work for entry-tier necros and clerics.
- Tonsmith caravan — Timtok and Ranvigoz Tonsmith (L29 merchants) on the central plain; faction restored to the Tonsmith caravan line after the audit fixed an earlier polarity inversion.
- Innkeeps and travelling merchants — a handful of L30 and L45 vendors scattered along the road network.
- Open ambient wildlife — wolves, snakes, willowisps, kodiaks, ghouls, willowisps, low-level outdoor fare.
Camps
The plain breaks into two practical zones:
- Northern band (y ≈ 600 – 1000, x ≈ ‑1600 to 1400) — high-density mixed roster: hill giants, nightfall giants, werewolves, kodiaks, willowisps, plains cats, zombies, skeletons, black bears, orc pawns. Several coord clusters of ~40 spawns each. This is the main "outdoor leveling" band for 10-30 groups.
- Southern pocket (x ≈ ‑600 to ‑200, y ≈ ‑600) — ghouls, asps, rattlesnakes, pumas, hill giants, willowisps, giant spiders, skeletons, zombies. Lower-level outdoor lane.

Named NPC respawn timers default to 6 minutes (TAKP-canonical baseline). Brizzenoth_Scyth uses 20 minutes per the same source. Coords above are bucketed to 200-unit grid for clarity; in-zone, individual spawn points are tighter.
Primary factions
After the 2026-05-23 audit re-pointed the cross-zone faction stamps, the dominant in-zone factions are:
- Commons Residents (702) — innkeeps and caravan merchants
- Commons orc faction (213) / (698) — restored from the Faydark Death Fist stamp that was bleeding in
- Animal species factions (1497 / 1498 / 1516) — restored from generic "Noobie Monsters" / "Beasts" stamps
- Tonsmith Caravan (1188) — restored after polarity inversion fix
- Bloodsabers (336) — Mojax_Hikspin entry-tier line
Why bother
West Commonlands is where Freeport-side starting characters spend a meaningful slice of their early levels. The orc camps give clean grouping content from 5 through about 15. The Befallen trap door makes the zone the obligatory waypoint for any player heading into the multi-floor undead dungeon — Paladin, Cleric, and any class that wants undead-focused XP will pass through here repeatedly. On The Last Camp, the any-race-any-class doctrine means West Commonlands sees Halfling Necromancers and Erudite Warriors who would never have started here in vanilla — the corridor still serves them.
Field notes
The orc camps pull cleanly if you stay back from the camp center; they chain if you do not. Keep distance between camps when working a small group through the plain. The Befallen trap door is unmissable on the map but the surrounding ground is open enough that orc patrols can wander into a fight at the entrance — clear the immediate area before dropping a group through. After the 2026-05-23 audit, the werewolf L18 cohort uses 100-radius aggro — the pre-audit 35-radius "short-leash" behavior was a CB drift, not canonical, and is reverted. Bind in the zone if you plan to make repeat Befallen runs; the dungeon does not allow bind, so the surface recall is the corpse-run shortcut. Watch the road north toward Highpass at higher levels — the corridor sees roamers that outscale the surface plain. The Commonlands Tunnel into East Commonlands is a frequent travel choke; do not med inside it. Plan camps with a clear extraction toward the central plain. Mojax_Hikspin (Bloodsabers) is in the southern pocket — useful for any entry-tier necro or evil cleric who needs the faction tick.
