Crypt of Decay
Bertoxxulous's inner sanctum. The Plaguebringer's throne sits at the center of his rotting court, gated through Plane of Disease.
- Plane of Disease
The Crypt of Decay (CoD) is the inner court of Bertoxxulous, the Plaguebringer — the sealed sanctum where the rot god holds his throne. Where the outer Plane of Disease is a blighted plain, the Crypt is a vaulted underground necropolis: tomb halls, sacrificial chambers, and a central cathedral with Bertoxxulous himself enthroned at the heart. The disease mechanics from PoD escalate here — DoTs stack faster, AE plague effects go off in tighter intervals, and several named bosses apply contagion debuffs that spread player-to-player if positioning slips. CoD is the deity-plane payoff for the Bertoxxulous progression chain, and one of the era's signature contagion-themed encounters.
Content
- Plague-touched undead — rotting humanoid trash through the outer halls.
- Crypt wardens — caster-melee mix guarding the inner chambers.
- Lieutenants of Decay — named bosses, each holding a tribute key for the throne approach.
- Contagion bearers — rare-spawn casters with player-to-player AE effects.
- Plague-priest named — caster-types with stacking disease curses.
- Bertoxxulous — plane boss, multi-phase fight in the central cathedral, drops his deity-tier loot.
- Tribute-key chain — required cumulative drop set to open the throne approach.
Why bother
Crypt of Decay is the Bertoxxulous loot zone — the only place his deity-tier class armor, the rot-themed weapons, and the Plaguebringer relics drop. Several Cleric, Druid, and Shaman epic-adjacent components route through CoD lieutenants, and the disease-themed Necromancer and Shadow Knight pieces are some of the more distinctive raid-armor sets in PoP. The contagion-themed weapons in particular are recognizable on sight and frequently appear in guild kill-shot screenshots.
CoD also closes out the disease branch of PoP progression. A clean Bertoxxulous kill is one of the deity-plane checkboxes that gates downstream elemental access. For guilds running the full flag chain, CoD is a required clear, not a side trip. The encounter design is also among the more memorable in the era — the contagion mechanic forces real raid positioning, and a sloppy run will wipe to player-to-player AE before the fight is over. The Plaguebringer himself is a multi-phase boss with a kill-window pacing that punishes burn-too-late raids.
Using it well
CoD is reached only through Plane of Disease — there is no direct portal from Plane of Tranquility. Clear the PoD lieutenant chain first to unlock the Crypt portal. Bring a dedicated disease-cure cleric rotation and pre-buff disease and magic resist before every named pull; the DoT and contagion stacks will overwhelm a group running on raw HP alone. Cure Disease and Cure Curse should be on rotation, not on demand.
Pull from the outer halls inward, treating each lieutenant as a checkpoint. The contagion bearers are the zone's positioning trap — spread the raid before any rare-spawn caster pull, and have a backup cleric ready to cure cross-stacks. The Last Camp's open class system means cleric supply isn't a bottleneck; any race can roll one, and CoD's healing demand rewards guilds that staff three or four clerics deep. Save Bertoxxulous for last; the lieutenant tribute keys are one-shot and the throne approach is the run's culmination — don't pull the Plaguebringer before the keys are turned in and the cleric stack is rested.
